MediaTek, NTT DOCOMO Team Up for LTE

Taiwanese IC designer MediaTek and Japanese telecom operator NTT DOCOMO have jointly signed a licensing agreement on July 27, 2010, for deploying the 4G LTE (Long Term Evolution) technology, according to the Economic Daily News of Taiwan. The 4G alliance is reportedly the first phase of the strategic collaboration between MediaTek and NTT DOCOMO. After the deal is finalized, it is projected that the LTE technology will be integrated with MediaTek's 2G and 3G technologies to provide solutions for Japanese and global markets, according to a press release by MediaTek. Further details regarding the value of the deal, however, were not yet disclosed. Besides technology licensing, MediaTek also plans to create a new team to conduct LTE interoperability testing with NTT DOCOMO in Japan.
